Early Life and Career

Samuels was born in Kingston, Jamaica but he grew up in the North York and Scarborough districts of Toronto after he moved to Canada at the age of three. He later lived in Ajax, Ontario, and was a student at Pickering High school. Samuels grew up listening to Jamaican music due to his father’s influence and at the age of 8, he started playing piano. Later, he started using FL Studio beat-making program, and even without any training he was able to secure three consecutive wins in ‘The battle of the Beat-makers Championships’. After becoming a multi-champion of the competition he was given a position on the competition’s judging panel.

At the age of 18, Samuels started working as a producer when he worked on two tracks for Drake’s mix tape titled ‘Room for Improvement’. Following that, Samuels worked on the remix of ‘Set it Off’ which featured Dr. Dre. The duo was said to be working on Dr. Dre’s highly anticipated album ‘Detox’ however the album was shelved and none of the songs with Samuels’s production work were released. Later, he worked with Busta Rhyme on Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God.

Samuels was credited as the producer of Eminem’s 2010 hit song ‘Not Afraid. He also worked with Das Racist on his debut album track ‘hahahahaha jk?’. In Drake’s 2011 album ‘Take Care, he assisted as a producer. Samuels also produced 2013’s ‘5 AM in Toronto’ song by Drake. He has collaborated with Drake the most and works as his in-house producer. Boi-1da is the in-house producer for the OVO Sound label and apart from that he also regularly collaborates with other artists.

He worked with Lecrae on a song titled ‘Gimme a Second’ and with Bizzle on his album called ‘The Good Fight3’. Boi-1da produced ‘Party Favors’ for Tinashe featuring Young Thug. Samuels also worked on Rihanna’s and Drake’s hit song ‘Work’. The song peaked at number 1 on Billboard Hot 100. He also worked on other hits including, ‘Controlla’, ‘1 of 1’, ‘Only U’, and ‘Regt in Your Tears’. In 2016, he worked as a co-producer for Kanye West’s single ‘Real Friends. He produced ‘No Limits’ by G-Easy which featured A$AP Rocky and Cardi B in 2017. In 2018, he produced songs for Drake, 6ix9ine, and Eminem. He was also the producer of 2019’s ‘1000 Nights’ by Ed Sheeran and in 2020 he also served as a producer for Jack Harlow’s ‘Tyler Herro’.
