The second child of former National Basketball Association (NBA) star Manute Bol and his wife Ajok Kuag, Bol was born in Khartoum, Sudan, on November 16, 1999. Manute was denied entry to the United States by the Sudanese government after being charged of being an American spy. The family went to Cairo, Egypt in 2001, but despite having tickets to the US from American friends, they were left trapped for many months due to visa issues. He didn’t want to play basketball when he was four years old, but his dad persuaded him to start. Bol eventually started working out in the gym with his father. When he was still in the eighth grade, New Mexico State made him their first NCAA Division I offer.

Bol played his first season at Oregon in 2018–19 under head coach Dana Altman. Against Portland State on November 6, 2018, Bol made his debut with a double-double of 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 23 minutes. Bol suffered a left foot injury and missed the remainder of the season after scoring 20 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and blocking 4 shots in a victory over San Diego on December 12.
