Scalabrine was one of four children in his family and was born on 18 March 1978 in Long Beach, California. He earned his high school diploma from the prestigious institute, Enumclaw High School in Enumclaw, Washington, in 1996. In 1996, he enrolled at Highline College, where he redshirted his second year before playing his debut year with the Thunderbirds basketball team. The Thunderbirds won the state junior college championship in 1996–1997 after going 31–1. He changed schools to the University of Southern California in 1998. (USC). He was the only player to start each of the team’s 28 games during his rookie season with the USC Trojans. Scalabrine was selected to the All-Pac-10 first team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 15 first team during his second season with USC. Scalabrine received a history degree at graduation from USC.

On January 31, 2002, when the Nets faced the Milwaukee Bucks, he made his NBA debut. Scalabrine picked up the moniker “Veal” while playing with the Nets, a parody on the meal veal scaloppini. Scalabrine and the Boston Celtics agreed to a five-year deal on August 2, 2005. He and the team had agreed upon the parameters of the contract, which would be worth $15 million over five years, a month earlier. Scalabrine and the Chicago Bulls reached a non-guaranteed contract on September 21, 2010. Scalabrine joined the Italian team Benetton Treviso on September 22, 2011, during the 2011 NBA lockout. After the lockout was over, he left the organization in December 2011 to pursue chances in the NBA. Scalabrine re-signed with the Bulls on December 12, 2011, and participated in 28 games in the 2011–12 season. He turned down the opportunity to work as Tom Thibodeau’s assistant coach with the Bulls in September 2012 in favour of taking a job as a Boston Celtics commentator.
