Daniel Edward Aykroyd CM known as Dan Aykroyd is a Canadian comedian, actor, musician, screenwriter, producer and businessman. Aykroyd is best known for his roles as Ray Stantz in the “Ghostbusters” film series and as one of the founding cast members of “Saturday Night Live.” He is also a part of The Blues Brothers, a touring band that started as a “Saturday Night Live” spoof starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

Daniel Edward Aykroyd was born on July 1, 1952, to Lorraine Helene and Samuel Cuthbert Peter Hugh Aykroyd in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Dan was born with webbed feet and was given the Asperger’s syndrome and Tourette’s syndrome diagnoses at the ages of 12 and 8. He was raised in a Catholic household and was adamant about becoming a priest until he was seventeen. He went to Ottawa’s “St. Pius X High School” and later, he attended the Ottawa-based “St. Patrick’s High School.” He enrolled at “Carleton University” in 1969 to study political science and criminal sociology. He used to perform in “Sock ‘n Buskin,” a community-based theater group at the university.

When he was 17 years old, Aykroyd made his television debut on the Canadian sketch comedy program “The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour.” Dan was eventually hired by Michaels as a writer and performer for “Saturday Night Live.” From 1975 until 1979, Aykroyd appeared on the show as well-known characters like Yortuk Festrunk, Beldar Conehead, and Elwood Blues. Dan had intended to co-star with Belushi in “Ghostbusters”, but after he passed away in 1982 from a drug overdose, Dan rewrote the part of Peter Venkman for Bill Murray. In the 2021 film “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” he played the same part once more. He also played a widowed priest on the ABC comedy “Soul Man” from 1997 to 1998. Over two dozen movies featuring Dan have been released in the 2000s.

In 1990,Aykroyd received an Academy Award nomination for his role in “Driving Miss Daisy.” In 1994, Carleton University awarded him an honorary doctorate in literature, and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry presented him with a Snuffed Candle Award in 1997.
