Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Milian has Afro-Cuban descent. She was raised in Waldorf; Maryland and it was at the young age of 4 that she started showing an interest in the entertainment industry. At the age of 9, she started auditioning for local commercials and was starred in a Wendy’s and Honeycomb commercial. She also played a lead role in theatre in the musical show Annie. At the age of 13, Milian moved to Los Angeles with her mother. Initially, she only wanted to become an actress and landed a role as host for Disney Channel’s show called Movie Surfers.

Milian started working with producer Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins after he discovered her talent as a singer. The two started working together and Milian started writing her own songs at the age of 17.

Her first musical appearance was on rapper Ja Rule’s studio album Rule 3:36 which was released in 2000. The song featuring Milian was titled ‘Between Me and You’. She landed a record deal with Def Soul Records and in 2001 she released her self-titled debut album. The album was able to peak at number 23 in UK, 36 in Netherlands, and 98 in Sweden. The release of the album was delayed in US due to the incident of 9/11 and Milian opted to release only 2 singles later which were able to top various charts. Following this she was featured on rapper Romeo’s track titled ‘All Gravy’ and she also sang theme songs for animate series Kim Possible, and Call Me, Beep Me. She also worked with Hilary Duff on her Christmas album.

Apart from singing, Milian always wanted to become an actress and initially she landed some minor roles in various films and TV series including Sister Sister, Smart Guy Get Real, American Pie, The Wood, and The Steve Harvey Show. She also appeared in Torque but her first lead role was in 2003’s romcom Love Don’t Cost a Thing.
