David Robinson Early Life
David Robinson, the second child of Freda and Ambrose, was born on August 6, 1965 in Key West, Florida. He went to Manassas’ Osbourn Park High School. He joined his school’s basketball team despite never participating in organized basketball, and went on to receive all-area and all-district recognition.
Following his 1983 high school graduation, Robinson decided to enlist in the US Naval Academy. He majored in mathematics there while participating on the basketball team. Robinson had reached 7′ before the start of his sophomore year, making it impossible for him to serve on any US naval vessel. Robinson joined the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia as an officer in civil engineering after receiving his degree.

Robinson committed to the San Antonio Spurs in 1989. He immediately made history by leading the struggling team to a record of 56-26, the greatest single-season turnaround in NBA history up to that date. Shaquille O’Neal and Robinson were competing for the NBA scoring crown at the time, which Robinson eventually won with 71 points in a single game versus the Lakers. The Spurs managed to win the NBA Draft Lottery despite having a terrible 20-62 record, using that money to select great player Tim Duncan.
The Spurs ended the 1998–99 regular season with Duncan on the roster and went on to reach the NBA Playoffs with a 37–13 record, an NBA record. Robinson and Duncan’s combined strength allowed the squad to defeat the New York Knicks in the championship game in just five games. Due to their success, Robinson and Duncan earned the moniker “The Twin Towers.” He and the Spurs defeated the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals in six games during his final season.
