Early Life
Stern was born on 22 September 1942. He used to live in Teaneck, New Jersey. David was a basketball fan and used to play in his adulthood. He used to attend the games at Madison Square Garden. During a match at New York Lawyers League game, he had a knee injury. David went to Teaneck High School and for university, he went to Rutgers University for B.A degree in history. There he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Later in 1966, David got a J.D. from Columbia Law School.
Career
David after completing law joined a law firm of Rose, Goetz, Proskauer, and Mendelssohn that is associated with the NBA. He was a lead attorney in the case of Robertson V. National Basketball Association which was against NBA players. He helped them to have a settlement and end the case. In 1978 David left Proskauer Rose and joined NBA’s counsel. In 1980 he was promoted to NBA’s executive vice president’s post. He was with NBA’s team for drug testing and most of their players used cocaine.
In 1984 David was made Commissioner of NBA. After this NBA had a contract with Nike and they gained more attention after this. In 1987 he shipped VHS tapes to China to help them gain attention outside North America. In 1995 NBA was expanded to other places as well such as Canada. David made new seven franchises and the number of teams was 30 by the year 2004. David announced an age limit for the selection of players.
In 2012 David resigned from NBA after being there for 30 years. In 2016 he was made a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame.
