McMillon is the oldest of three children born to Laura and Morris McMillon,. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 17, 1966. He was raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas. When McMillon was 16 years old, his parents relocated the family to Bentonville, Arkansas. McMillon, a sports enthusiast, was a point guard for the basketball team at Bentonville High School. Doug earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Tulsa.

McMillon has spent his whole career working for Walmart. In 1984, when he was a youngster, he accepted his first position in the business. McMillon started working at Walmart as a summer worker when he was a teen. He unloaded trucks in a distribution center throughout the summer. The next year, as McMillon pursued his MBA, he called Walmart and expressed interest in receiving training to work as a buyer after his studies were complete.
After that, McMillon returned to Walmart as an assistant manager at a location in Tulsa, Oklahoma. McMillon relocated to Walmart’s Bentonville headquarters to join the buyer-training program in 1991.
