Janusz Jerzy Gottwald, his father, was an architect from Ask, Poland. Dr. Luke spent his early years in New York City. His initial aspiration was to become a drummer, but his parents forbade drum sets in the home. Instead, he used his older sister’s guitar to teach himself how to play the guitar when he was thirteen. He went to the Manhattan School of Music, where he spent almost two years.
