Roberto Miguel Rey Jnr. was born on 1 October 1961 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to engineer Roberto Miguel Rey and Avelina Reisdörfer. In Sao Paolo, Brazil, a single mother raised Rey and he explained that he was driven to make his ambition of immigrating to America and becoming a doctor come true. Dr. Rey and his three siblings accepted writer Orson Scott Card’s invitation to move to the US while he was serving as a Mormon missionary in Brazil at the time. When he was 12 years old, they moved to Utah. He was “a nerd” who spent practically all of his time studying in Utah, according to Dr. Rey.
