Theodore Ernest Els is a South African professional golfer. His nickname is “The Big Easy”. He has 70 career victories including 4 Major Championships such as the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997 and The Open Championship in 2002 and 2012. He topped the European Tour order of merit in 2003 and 2004. He had the number one spot in Official World Golf Ranking. He was also elected for the World Golf Hall of Fame. Ernie used to play cricket, tennis, rugby, and golf at the age of 8. He played tennis and won Eastern Transvaal Junior Championships at age of 13. He learned golf from his father and was soon better than him. He won Junior World Golf Championship. He won the South African Amateur after his 17th birthday.

In 1989, he turned professional and won his first professional tournament in 1991. Els won Sunshine Tour Order of Merit in 1991-92 and 1994-95. Els’s first major championship was at U.S Open in 1994. He won the Dubai Desert Classic and the Toyota World Match Play Championship. In the United States, he won GTE Byron Nelson Classic. Els won World Match Play Championship for the third time.

In 1997, Els won his second U.S. Open. He nearly won the World Match Play Championship but lost to Vijay Singh. From 1998-99 he won PGA and European tours. In 2000, he earned life membership of the European Tour. In 2002, he won Heineken Classic at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Els won his fourth World Match Play title along with his third Nedbank Challenge. He earned his first European Tour Order of Merit in 2003. In 2004 he won 6 times on the tours. In 2005 he had a knee injury, and, on his return, he won the Dunhill Championship.

Els did a comeback and won the Honda Classic on 2 March 2008. He changed his swing in 2008 and 2010 he won the WGC-CA Championship. He again won U.S. Open title in June. At end of 2010, he won PGA Grand Slam against David Toms, but he lost his top 50 ranking in 2011.

In 2012, he failed to qualify for the Masters but he surprised everyone by winning the 2012 Open Championship. In 2013, he won BMW International Open, and this moved his position from 20th to 14th. After this, he was not able to win and was embarrassed because of his performance. In March 2020 Els won the Hoag Classic and in October he won SAS Championship. He has won total of 74 professional tournaments.
