Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was a professional footballer from Portugal. Considered as one of the greatest players in the sports history, he was nicknamed the Black Panther, the Black Pearl, and o Rei meaning ‘The King’. He played as a striker and was known for his speed, precision, and right foot shoots at the goal post.

Eusébio played for Portugal from 1961 to 1973. During his time with the national team, he helped them reach third place in 1966 FIFA World cup. He was the top goal scorer of the 1966 world cup with nine goals. In 1965, he won a Ballon d’Or and was a two times runner up in the years 1962 and 1966. He won FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in 1966, and also the FIFA World Cup Bronze Ball. He was member of FIFA World Cup All-star team of 1966. In the same year, he was named as BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.

In 440 competitive matches, he scored 473 goals, making him Benfica’s all-time top goal scorer. He helped Benfica win 11 Primeira Liga titles and a European cup. He also helped them reach European cup finals in the year 1963, 1965 and 1968. He scored 48 goals in the pre-Champions League era of the European cup, which makes him the second highest goal scorer of that era. Eusébio was also top scorer in three seasons of European cup (1964-1966 and 1967-1968). He also won Bola da Prata 7 times, which was awarded to Primeira Liga top scorer. In 1968, he became the first player ever to win the European Golden boot, he also won it a second time in 1973.

Eusébio has played a total of 745 matches and scored 733 goals during his professional career. He is always named as one of the best players lists and polls whether they are compiled by fans or critics. In a poll carried out by IFFHA, he was placed 9th best footballer of the 20th Century. He was rated 10th on World Soccer magazine’s list of Best footballers of 20th Century. He was also on Pele’s FIFA 100 list. In 2003, he was selected as Golden Player (their most outstanding player of the past 50 years) of Portugal by the Portuguese Football Federation. He was named Portuguese Footballer of the Year in 1970 and 1973. He was also honored with Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry and Grand Cross of the Order of Merit.

Eusébio died when he was 71 years old due to a heart attack. On 5th January 2014, when Eusébio died, following his death the Portuguese government declared three days of national mourning.
