Evander Holyfield Early Life

On October 19, 1962, Evander Holyfield was born in area of Atmore, Alabama and he was youngest of nine children. His upbringing took place in the violent Bowen Homes Housing Projects in Atlanta, Georgia when the family relocated there. At just seven years old, he began boxing and went on to win the Boys Club Boxing Tournament.

In the ring, Holyfield established himself by competing in the Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Light-Heavyweight divisions. At the age of 13, Young Holyfield met the requirements to participate in his first junior Olympics. When he was 15 years old, he had already won the regional match and the Best Boxer prize, making him the Southeastern Regional Champion. In Caracas, Venezuela, during the 1983 Pan American Games, Holyfield represented the United States.

Evander Holyfield made his professional debut at the age of 21 following his 1984 Summer Olympics bronze medal in the Light Heavyweight division. He moved up to the cruiserweight class in 1985, and the following year, he defeated Dwight Muhammad Qawi to claim the WBA Cruiserweight championship. His first victory as a heavyweight came in 1988 when he fought Buster Douglas to earn The Ring, Lineal, WBC, WBA, and IBF belts in 1990. Holyfield fell to Riddick Bowe in 1992, which was his first defeat as a professional boxer.

In 1990, he won the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles, in 1993, he won the WBA and IBF belts and in 1996 and 2000, he won the WBA crowns. Holyfield decided to retire in 2014, and The Ring’s list of the 100 greatest punchers ever places him at number 77. After his retirement, Holyfield acted as Zhang Zhilei’s heavyweight coach and mentor.
