Franchino Baresi is an Italian retired football player and manager. He is currently Italian football youth team’s coach. Baresi is known for playing as a central defender. Considered as one of the greatest defenders of all time, Baresi was ranked 19th in the World Soccer magazine’s list of the 100 greatest players of the 20th Century.

He spent his 20-year career with AC Milan and was captain of the team for 15 seasons. Franco was nicknamed as ‘Piscinin’ (the little one), he was given that name because his older brother Giuseppe Baresi was also a famous footballer. After showcasing his skill set and gaining success, he was called ‘Kaiser Franz’ which was a reference to Franz Beckenbauer.

 Baresi had help AC Milan secure various wins during his time with the team including 3 UEFA Champions Leagues titles, 6 Serie A titles, 4 Supercoppa Italiana titles, 2 European Super Cups and 2 Intercontinental Cups. In 1999, He earned the title of Milan’s Player of the Century. He played his final season for Milan in 1997 and after his retirement, Milan retired his shirt number 6. Baresi formed one of the most famous defense units of all time alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Tassotti, and Fillippo Galli.

Despite being short to play at the center back position, Baresi played with elegance, strength, and concentration like no other.

Baresi was a member of Italy’s national team when they won the 1982 FIFA world cup. He also played for Italy in 1990 World cup and he was name in the FIFA world cup All Star team. In 1994 world cup he represented Italy as team captain and helped them reach finals but failed to secure a win. Baresi played UEFA European Championship 1980 and 1988 for Italy. He also played in the 1984 Olympics for Italy. The team reached semi-finals on all these occasions.

In 2004, Baresi was named by Pele on his List of 125 Living Legends at the FIFA centenary award. In 2013, he was honored in Italian Football Hall of Fame. In 1989 he was Ballon d’Or runner up. He also won Golden Foot 2012 under the football legend category. He was named in IFFHS All-time Men’s Dream Team in 2021. In 1989 to 1990 he was Coppa Italia’s top scorer.

Baresi retired at the age of 37. In 2002, Baresi joined Fulham as director of football but left in the August of same year after some differences between him and Fulham manager. He also coached Milan’s Primavera under 20 squad and the Berretti under 19 squad. He eventually retired from that coaching position as well. Baresi is currently managing Italy’s national youth team.
