Ferenc Puskás Career
Puskás was forward, attacking midfielder in the football field. He started his career as a footballer by playing for teams based in Hungary such as Kipest and Budapest Honved. While playing in Hungarian League, he was the top goal scorer 4 times. In the year 1948, he was the top goal scorer in Europe. In the 1950s, Hungarian national team was known as Mighty Magyars and Puskás was a prominent member as well as he captain of the team. After emigrating to Spain in the year 1958 due to Hungarian Revolution, he joined Real Madrid. With Real Madrid, Puskás managed to win four Pichichis and in the two European Champions Cup finals he scored seven goals. He played 619 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish Leagues as well as National cups and he scored 618 goals.
Puskás played 85 international matches for Hungary and scored 84 goals. He also appeared in 4 international matches for Spain. In 1952, Puskás became an Olympic champion and he also took his national team to the final of 1954 World cup. He won two consecutive European Cups in 1959-1960 and won a third one in 1966. He also won ten national championships including 5 Hungarian championships and 5 Spanish Primera Division. Puskás has earned eight individual scoring honors. IFFHS acknowledged him as the Greatest top division scorer of the 20th Century. Puskás is sixth top goal scorer of all times with 806 goals in 793 official games. He also has second most assists in the history, a total of 362 assists.
After his retirement as a player, Puskás became a football manager. As their coach, he led Panathinaikos to European Cup final in 1971. He took charge of the Hungarian national team temporarily in 1993. He became one of the first ambassador of FIFA/SOS Charity. In 2002, a stadion in Budapest was renamed Puskás Ferenc Stadion in his honor.
In the UEFA Jubilee Awards 2003, Hungarian Football Federation named Puskás as the best Hungarian player of the last 50 years. He was also named on Pele’s FIFA 1OO list of world’s greatest living player. In 2009, FIFA Puskás award was announced by FIFA. The award was given to the player who has scored the most beautiful goal over the past year.
In 2000, it was revealed that Puskás was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He died at the age of 79 years due to pneumonia infection.
