Gustavo Dudamel Early Life
Gustavo Dudamel was born on January 26, 1981. His mother Solange and his father Oscar provided him with his first exposure to music. Dudamel started receiving official music instruction when he was 5 years old. It quickly became apparent that Gustavo was a musical prodigy. He started taking lessons with Venezuela’s renowned music training programme, El Sistema. He started playing the violin before learning composition and conducting. Dudamel received additional conducting training from José Antonio Abreu, who had developed El Sistema in the 1970s. Abreu appointed Gustavo Dudamel as the conductor of The Venezuelan Simón Bolvar Youth Orchestra. In the following years, Dudamel and the orchestra made journeys to Europe, all to rave reviews.

Major orchestras in Europe and the United States had taken notice of Dudamel on his trips there. He started getting requests to perform as a guest conductor. He was appointed main conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony in 2006. His debut performances in an opera house occurred in 2006 at the Staatsoper in Berlin and La Scala in Milan. He later made a second appearance at each of those prominent venues in 2008 to conduct Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème. Dudamel was appointed music director designate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008. He took up this position in that capacity in 2009.
He was honored with the Pegasus Prize by the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto in 2006.
