In Lagos, Nigeria, in 1963, Hakeem Olajuwon was born to Yoruba parents Abike and Salim, who ran a cement company. When he entered a local tournament, he started playing basketball while a student at the Muslim Teachers College. Later, Olajuwon moved to the US to join the University of Houston Cougars basketball team. He began to gain the moniker “The Dream” at about this time owing to his effortless dunks. Olajuwon assisted in guiding the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA championship games in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Olajuwon was named the 1983 NCAA Tournament Player of the Year despite the fact that the team lost both games.
