Harvey Weinstein is an American film producer and convicted rapist which led to the end of his production career. He previously founded Miramax production company with brother Bob Weinstein. Then, they switched to their exclusive production house named The Weinstein Company. He is known for production of famous films like Pulp Fiction, Heavenly Creatures and Shakespeare in Love. He is currently serving a 23 years sentence in prison ordered in February 2020. Recently, he was transferred to Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, California.

Harvey Weinstein Early Life

Harvey Weinstein was born on 19 March, 1952 in Downtown Flushing neighborhood of Queen borough in the city of New York. He was born to Jewish diamond cutter Max Weinstein and wife Miriam. His younger brother is Bob Weinstein. He graduated from John Brown High School then studied at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Initially, he worked in a talent agency’s mailroom before becoming a successful Hollywood producer. He started his career in early 1970s by producing rock concerts in Buffalo under the banner of Harvey & Corky productions including Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne and The Who. He is said to have sparked the #MeToo movement when around 70+ women alleged him of sexually assaulting them.

In 70s, Harvey and Bob created their own film distribution company called Miramax by using the profits gained by music production company. In the beginning, they produced music-oriented concert films. In 80s, Weinstein brothers acquired the rights for two British films produced for Amnesty International. Later, they edited the two films into one in order to release in America titled The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball. Film was a commercial success and popularized NGO Amnesty International in America. Miramax gained attention after the release of documentary The Thin Blue Line in 1988. It was based on Randall Dale Adams which led to his release. They mostly produced arthouse films during this decade. After the success of their released film Sex, Lies, & Videotape, Miramax became most successful independent studio in the United States. In 1993, after the success of The Crying Game, Disney offered the Weinsteins $80 million for Miramax’s ownership. The brothers agreed on the condition of remaining the head of the company. Pulp Fiction was released in 1994 which became the first Miramax blockbuster. They also distributed independent film Clerks at the same time. On 30 September 2005, both brothers founded a new production company named The Weinstein Company.
