Islam Makhachev Early Life
Islam was born in Makhachkala on 27 September 1991 in a middle-class family. Lak by ethnicity, Islam was raised in the isolated village of Burshi, which is now a part of Dagestan. Islam is also trained and competed in combat sambo and he took home the gold medal at the World Combat Sambo Championship of 2016. In the Sambo championship match of 2016, he defeated Bulgarian Valentin Benishev by 7-0.

On February 12, 2011, Islam faced Tengiz in his M-1 Global first fight and won in the first round. On August 21, 2013, Makhachev competed in M-1 Challenge 41 against Rander Junio, an unbeaten black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At M-1 Challenge 49 on June 7, 2014, Makhachev challenged M-1 Global Yuri Ivlev. On September 7, 2014, Makhachev defeated his opponent Ivica Truscek by his submission in the 3rd round of the final fight for M-1 Global before joining the ultimate fighting championship.
