In the 1990s, Calacanis started his career as a reporter in New York, where he covered the internet industry. On September 24, 2003, Calacanis and Brian Alvey co-founded the blog network Weblogs, Inc., which received an angel investment from Mark Cuban. Weblogs, Inc.’s blogs company was producing $1,000 per day simply from AdSense two years after its founding. Calacanis has invested in Robinhood, Wealthfront, Uber, Desktop Metal, Datastax, Thumbtack, Superhuman, and Trello as an angel investor.

In 2017, HarperCollins published a book about angel investing by Calacanis titled “Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups—Timeless Advice from an Angel Investor Who Turned $100,000 into $100,000,000.” Calacanis made a $1 billion investment in the meditation app Calm in 2018.
