Katherine Jackson is known as the head of Jackson Family of entertainers. The family includes two of the greatest sings and songwriters, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson.

Katherine Jackson was born in Clayton, Alabama and always had passion for acting and becoming a country singer. At the time, there were no known Black Country singers and hence due to the lack of representation the notion was dismissed. However, she was a part of her high school band.

Katherine Scruse met Joseph Jackson in 1947 and the couple got married in 1949. Katherine took up the family name and became Katherine Jackson. The two shared ten children together and bonded over their shared love for music. Joseph Jackson helped his children form the band called ‘Jackson 5’ in 1966. The band included five of Joseph’s children and with humble beginnings they went to become the first group with four consecutive number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Katherine became a prominent member of her husband’s managing team in the year 1974.

All her children were prominent artists by the year 1984, when The Jacksons reunited for the Victory Tour. Her son Michael Jackson became known as ‘The King of Pop’ and had a huge impact on pop culture. The pop singer helped revolutionised the music and his dancing skills are still unmatched to this day. In 1982, Michael Jackson released an album titled ‘Thriller’ which he dedicated to his mother. Her daughter, Janet Jackson known for her socially conscious and provocative records, along with her dance and choreography is one of the most loved musical artist of her generation. Janet also dedicated her album ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ to her. Katherine Jackson helped her children become artists on their own and didn’t wanted to shape them in a mould like her husband. Due to her resilience and the positive impact she had on her children’s successful music career, Essence which is a national urban magazine named Katherine as ‘Mother of the Year’.

She received this honour in 1985. Katherine became an author of her biographical book titled ‘My Family, The Jackson’ in 1990. She discussed various aspects of her life in the book including her relationship with her husband and her children. In 2009, after the death of her son Michael Jackson. Katherine Jackson was granted the sole custody of her grandchildren and over many years and court order later, Katherine resigned as a co-guardian to Michael’s children in 2017. She stated the reason to be her advanced age.
