Antonio Marquis ‘L.A.’ Reid was born on 7 June 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. He was interested in music since childhood. Reid grew up listening to James Brown, Led Zeppelin and Sly Stone. He would turn every vessel in the kitchen into a drum. His birthplace Cincinnati has its own music tradition that played a role in his interest for music. As a teenager, Reid started playing drums for bands and gained popularity in small scale crowds. His nickname L.A. came from his picky behavior in expensive clothing. He went to Harvard Business School for executive education before becoming the CEO of Arista Records. He has four children out of 3 relationships.

In 1970s, Antonio started by playing drum for the band Pure Essence. However, he gained fame by working with a rock group named The Deele, who had several hit songs. This is where he met Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds. Reid co-founded record label LaFace record label with him, which was a joint venture with Arista records. LaFace became the most popular record label in late 90s to early 2000s. HitCo publishing was established in 1996 in collaboration with WindSwept music. Reid founded HitCo record label in 2017. Under this record label, he has worked with popular names in music industry namely: Bobby Brown, Travis Scott, TLC, Usher, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne, Kanye West, Toni Braxton, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.
As of August 2022, HitCo label is said to have been sold to a Atlanta based private company called Concord. HitCo had been home to other artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Outkast’s Big Boi, Saint Jhn, Dixie D’Amelio, and Yella Beezy. Reid is known to bring back career of music artist Mariah Carey with her multi-platinum music album The Emancipation of Mimi in 2005. He served as CEO Epic Records and CEO cum Chairman Island Def Jam Music Group. He appeared as judge in the U.S. version of the X-Factor along with Simon Cowell, and Demi Lovato.
