Gerald Whitney Stone, an economist, and Sheila Lois Stone welcomed their first child, Matt Stone, on May 26, 1971, in Houston, Texas (Belasco). He has Jewish ancestry from his mother’s side and Irish-American ancestry from his father. They served as the inspiration for the South Park characters Gerald and Sheila Broflovski. Stone was raised in Littleton, Colorado, a Denver suburb, where he attended Heritage High School, along with his younger sister Rachel. He studied at Colorado University Boulder. His father demanded that his son major in something “useful” because he was afraid he might “become a musician and a bum”. They agreed that Matt couldn’t major in both math and movies.
