In Portland, Oregon, Handelman was born and schooled. He grew up in a Jewish family. Handelman graduated in 1991 from Catlin Gabel School. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 while participating in the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity there. In 2003, he graduated from UCLA with an MBA.
