Michael Gaughan Early Life

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Gaughan moved to Las Vegas when he was 13 years old. He attended Bishop Gorman High School. He graduated from the school in 1961. Michael Gaughan is the son of Jackie Gaughan. Jackie was also a casino owner and operator. At the young age of 13, he started working at Flamingo. He started out as a pool attendant. Later, at El Cortez, he also held the job of busboy and dishwasher. Ambitious as he was, Gaughan started out by opening a dealer’s school.

Michael Gaughan Racing Career

In the early years of his life, Michael Gaughan showed a great interest in racing. Gaughan established himself as a good and accomplished racer.  In 1966, he was able to secure a win at the Mint 400 race with his driving skills. He also competed in various other racing competitions.

His interests didn’t stop at racing, in 1999 he founded National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) race team, South Point Racing. South Point Racing also called Orleans Racing competed in the Craftsman Truck Series, as well as in the NASCAR West Series. South Point Racing was also known for being the only NASCAR team that was based in Nevada and on the ground of Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Michael Gaughan’s son Brendan Gaughan was a driver for South Point Racing. However, the racing team was dissolved in 2007.

Michael Gaughan’s father was also a known casino owner and hence Michael fell in his father’s footsteps. He held various ownership roles in casinos. In 1979, Gaughan opened Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino. The opening cost for the casino was 11.5 million dollars and it was built on 4.3 acres of land. This became the stepping stone for Coast Casinos. Coast Casinos Inc. is a subsidiary of Boyd Gaming Corporation. It is based in Paradise, Nevada, and owned by Michael Gaughan.  Coast Casinos has been named the number 2 local casino brand in the Las Vegas market. It is only behind Station Casinos.

In 1985, Gaughan played an instrumental role in bringing the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s (PRCA) end-of-year championship event to Las Vegas. PRCA’s ended of year event is called National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Gaughan also serves on the NFR committee and in addition to this, he is also a sponsor of NFR and PRCA. Gaughan is also a board member of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. He has also been inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Gaming Hall of Fame. Michael Gaughan was honored with Professional Bull Rider’s Jim Shoulders Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

Gaughan has also been given permission rights to operate slot concession at Harry Reid International Airport.
