Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was brought into the world on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr. (1912-1990) and Odessa Grady Clay (1917-1994). When his cherished bicycle was stolen, a distraught 12-year-old Clay reported it to Louisville police officer Joe Martin (1916-1996) and pledged to punish the perpetrator.
