Nick Faldo Career

Faldo saw great success in golfing as an amateur playing and was given a golf scholarship by University of Houston. He took the scholarship but realized he wanted to focus on his golfing career more and left. Faldo turned professional in golf in 1976. That same year, he joined European Professional Golfer Association. In 1977, at the age of 20 he became the youngest Ryder Cup player of that time.  Faldo also succeed in European Tours securing a win in the 1977 and 1978 tour event.  With his five European Tour victories, Faldo topped Order of Merlin in the year 1983.

He won his first major title at The Open Championship in the year 1987. Faldo secured his second major championship in the Masters 1989 and successfully defended his title the following year. In the same year (1990) Faldo won another major title ‘The Open Championship’ and became the first player since Tom Watson to win two major titles in a same year. In 1992 Open Championship, he won the famous Claret Jug trophy for the third time. In the year 1996, Faldo won his third Masters tournament.

After 2005, Faldo only took part in small number of competitions. After competing in very few tournaments over the years, he decided to retire from Open championship after his final appearance at the 2015 St. Andrews Open.

Faldo has most major golf championship wins for a European player after Harry Vardon. He has won 29 European Tour titles and has been named European Tour Player of the Year three times. He was also named PGA Tour Player of the Year in 1990. Faldo has a total of 40 professional tournaments wins. He has spent almost 97 weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Faldo has also represented European a record of 11 times in the Ryder Cup and is one of the most successful players of the Ryder Cup with 23 match wins and 4 halves.

After making his golf appearances few and far between, Faldo became a TV commentator for ABC Sports PGA Tour coverage from 2004 to 2006. He was appreciated by many golf fans for his insights on the game and his British humor. Since 2007, he has worked with many broadcasters including CBS, Golf Channel and ABC.

In August 2022, Faldo retired from his broadcasting duties at CBS after working there for almost 16 years.

Faldo launched ‘Faldo Design’ a golf course designing company in 1991. In 1998, Faldo was inducted into World Golf hall of fame. At 1998 New Year Honors he was awarded the MBE and was made a Knight bachelor in 2009 for his services to the golf.
