Nile Rogers Early Life

Beverly Goodman gave birth to Rodgers in the Lower East Side of New York City. She was 14, when Rogers was born. Although influential in his life, Nile Rodgers Sr., his biological father, was rarely present as Rodgers grew up. He only had a handful of encounters with him before his passing away in 1970. In 1959, Goodman married Bobby Glanzrock. Glanzrock and Goodman were heroin addicts and Rodgers started using drugs at the age of 13. Rodgers played the flute and clarinet before picking up the guitar at the age of 16. He played the guitar with African, Persian, Latin, Jazz, and Boogaloo bands as a kid.

Rogers’s career saw a significant advancement when he teamed up with bassist Bernard Edwards in 1970. They started The Big Apple Band and later served as the supporting band for vocal group New York City. Their sole notable hit was the single “I’m Doin’ Fine Now”. Thanks to its success, Rodgers and Edwards were able to tour widely with New York City and perform with The Jackson 5. The Huge Apple Band and New York City parted ways after the success of their big hit faded away. After that, Edwards and Rodgers teamed up with drummer Tony Thompson to form the rock band “The Boys”. The band adopted the name Chic in 1977 and created a distinctive sound by fusing jazz, soul, and funk elements. “Dance, Dance, Dance” was one of their first big singles. The song was so successful that it led Atlantic Records to immediately offer Chic a record deal. Their songs gained popularity within the disco craze. Later in 1977, the outcome was a self-titled album. This album included a number of top 10 successes. This included the triple-platinum single “Le Freak,” which contributed to the success of the disco trend. “Good Times,” another standout track from this album, peaked at number one on the charts. They then decided to work on Sister Sledge’s album “We Are Family.” The album was a huge hit and the single “He’s The Greatest Dancer” did exceptionally well on the charts. Their final release for the label was “Believer”. At the conclusion of this time, Chic disbanded and Rodgers released, “Adventures in the Land of the Good Groove,” his debut solo album.
