Paolo Maldini is a retired professional footballer from Italy. Maldini played in left and center back position. He is called one of the greatest defenders and footballs in history. He majorly played for AC Milan and Italy national team and was the captain for both teams for many years. That earned him the nickname ‘Il Capitano’ (The Captain).

Paolo Maldini spent all 25 seasons of his professional career playing for Milan. During his time at Milan, he won a total number of 26 trophies including the European cup/UEFA Champions league five times, Coppa Italia, European/UEFA Super cups five times, Serie A title seven times, Supercoppa Italiana titles five times, Intercontinental Cups two times, and FIFA Club World cup once. In 2004, Maldini won Serie A Defender of the Year Award. He also won the Best Defender trophy at the UEFA Club Football Awards when he was 39 years old. Maldini is the epitome of one club man and after his retirement at the age of 41 in 2009, Milan also retired his number 3 shirt.

He made his international debut in 1988 for Italy. He played for 14 years in his national team and retired in 2002 with 126 caps. He was captain of the Italy national team for eight years. Maldini played 4 FIFA World Cups and 3 UEFA European Championships for Italy. He reached the final of 1994 World Cup tournament and also of European Championship 1998, but failed to secure a win.

In 1995, Maldini came 2nd for the FIFA World Player of the Year. He was also 3rd for 1994 and 2003 Ballon d’Or. Maldini was also named in Pele’s FIFA 100 list of world’s greatest living player. He was also chosen as the defender on the FIFA World cup Dream Team 2002. He also holds the record for most appearances for Milan in all competitions. He made 902 appearances for Milan. Maldini was also honored in 2012 with his named inducted in Italian Football Hall of Fame.  

After his retirement as a professional footballer, Maldini joined Chelsea, becoming a part of their coaching staff. In 2018, he accepted an offer by AC Milan and joined the club again as a sporting strategy and development director. In 2019, he was promoted to technical directors.

Within three years of becoming Milan’s technical director, he helped the team win their first Serie A title in 11 years. In 2022, Maldini renewed his contract with Milan and will be technical director of the club for further two years.

Maldini was awarded with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic 5th class in 1991 and 4th class in 2000.
