Robert Pittman was born on 28 December 1953 in Mississippi and raised in Brookhaven. He attended Brookhaven High School and Millsaps College. At the age of mere 15, he became a radio announcer and successfully programmed radio stations in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and NBC Flagship station. He had a passion for flying jets and learned lessons by earning money as a radio announcer since he was 15.

In his teens, while he was working as a radio announcer, he found his desire to work for radio. Gradually he moved towards television and hosted music videos and news shows at the age of 23.

With his passion for this profession and experience, Pittman teamed up with several other entrepreneurs and created MTV. It was launched in 1981 and he began to serve as the CEO of the network. The growth of the newly born channel MTV under Pittman’s leadership was truly enormous. During his tenure, MTV became the first profitable cable network. For the first time, he launched the coverage of live events in 1984 & 1985. Pittman truly left an impact on fashion and popular culture in the U.S. through his channel.

In 1986, Pittman co-founded Quantum Media with MCA and later on, bought the MCA. In 1989, Pittman sold the assets of MCA to Warner Communications and became Senior Advisor at Warner Communications. Warner Communications carried out a merger with Time Inc. to create Time Warner, and Pittman was appointed as the President of Time Warner Enterprises in 1990.

In the next 20 years approximately, Pittman underwent various stints. He controlled the ‘Six Flag Theme Park’, ‘Century 21 Real Estate, and later ‘AOL Networks as a CEO. His tenure at AOL Network was a real success and the number of members rose from 6 million to 30 million. In 2010, Pittman assumed the role of Chairman of Media and Entertainment for ‘Clear Channel’. He transformed the company to iHeartMedia, Inc. in 2014. Pittman is now the CEO of iHeartMedia, Inc. and under his leadership, it is now the #1 commercial podcast publisher.
