Sherry Lansing is a retired film industry executive and former American actress. She served as the production president at 20th Century Fox and the former CEO of Paramount Pictures. She was the first woman to receive the 1996 Pioneer of the Year award from the Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers. She was listed as one of the 30 most influential women in America by Ladies Home Journal in 2001, and 2003.

Sherry Lansing Early Life

On July 31, 1944, Sherry Lee Duhl gave birth to Lansing in Chicago, Illinois. When she was nine years old, her father, real estate investor David Duhl, passed away. Having remarried, her mother passed away in 1984 from ovarian cancer. Lansing graduated in 1962 from the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in 1966 while participating in the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.

Lansing is a former math instructor and a fashion model. She explored a career in acting, appearing in two John Wayne-starring movies released in 1970, Loving and Rio Lobo. But after becoming disappointed with her acting abilities, she made the decision to learn more about the movie business from the ground up. She accepted a position at MGM as a head script reader and contributed to the two popular movies Kramer vs. Kramer and The China Syndrome.

At age 35, Lansing was appointed by 20th Century Fox as the first female production president of a major studio as a result of her work at MGM. In December 1982, she left her position and joined up with Stanley R. Jaffe to form Jaffe-Lansing Productions. Before finding box office success with Fatal Attraction in 1987, which earned Jaffe and Lansing Academy Award nominations for Best Picture the following year, the business consistently put out a succession of modest hits through Paramount.

 The Accused (1988), starring Jodie Foster and examining rape and its effects on a victim’s life, was produced by the partnership. The movie was produced for only $6 million, but it brought in over $37 million worldwide. “The Accused” became a box office success and won Foster the Best Actress Academy Award.

She established the Sherry Lansing Foundation in 2005 intending to promote cancer research and raise awareness of the disease. The Exemplary Leadership in Management (ELM) Award, the highest distinction given by the UCLA Anderson School of Management, was given to her. For her involvement in cancer research, she was honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007.
