Steve Wynn Early Life

In New Haven, Connecticut, on January 27, 1942, Stephen Alan Weinberg was born. On the East Coast, his father Michael ran a network of illicit bingo halls. For his father Mike Wynn to manage the bingo hall at the silver Slipper casino on the Strip, the Wynn family relocated to Las Vegas in 1952. But within six weeks, the much more well-liked bingo games at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas drove him out of business. Wynn graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in English literature. His father passed away in 1963, just before Wynn graduated from Penn, leaving about $350,000 in gambling debts.

Steve Wynn Career Beginnings

Wynn had planned to enroll in Yale Law School’s law program but decided against it. Instead, he assumed control of the family’s Waysons Corner, Maryland, business. While his then-wife Elaine handled the money, Wynn ran the game by calling the numbers. Steve had the opportunity to interact with many of his dad’s former clients while running the parlor. These connections included several seasoned gamblers and Mafia figures.

Steve Wynn Success

In 1965, Steve Wynn acquired 3% of the Frontier Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip using Friedman’s connections and a $30,000 loan from a family friend. He was hired as the Frontier’s slot and casino manager when he was 25 years old. Howard Hughes and Caesars Palace entered into a property agreement in 1971, and Wynn was able to turn his gains from that deal into a controlling stake. With great success, Wynn transformed the Golden Nugget from a casino into a resort hotel and expanded it.

The Mirage, Wynn’s first significant casino on the Las Vegas Strip, debuted in November 1989 amid tremendous hoopla. Wynn debuted the much more lavish Bellagio, a $1.6 billion resort and casino, in October 1998. The newest property in Wynn’s portfolio, Encore Las Vegas, debuted right before Christmas 2008. With the launch of Wynn Macau in 2006 and Encore Macau in 2010, Wynn expanded his casino and resort business to Macau.
