On April 19, 1965, Marion Hugh Knight Jr. was born in Compton, California. His father gave him the childhood nickname “Sugar Bear,” which was later abbreviated to the more well-known “Suge.” His time at Lynwood High School was spent primarily on sports. Knight earned four-year letters in both football and track. After graduating from El Camino Community College in 1983, he spent the next two years at UNLV. There he excelled as a defensive lineman (UNLV). He was a two-year starter at UNLV who, according to all reports, was never in trouble with the law, showed respect for his coaches, and excelled academically. Knight briefly played defensive line for the Los Angeles Rams before working as a bodyguard and breaking into the music industry. Singer Bobby Brown was among his clientele. By the late 1980s, Knight had established his own publishing company.
