Suzanne De Pasee Early Life
De Passe was born in New York City on 19 July, 1946. Her father is of Haitian and French ancestry and her mother, born in Harlem, is of Jamaican descent. De Passe was also raised in Harlem. When she was 3 years old, her parents divorced amicably and had a pleasant relationship afterwards. Even after her father got remarried, all three of her parents remained cordial towards one another. She hails from a middle-class household, which allowed her to pursue a degree.
She attended New Lincoln School, where she honed her business acumen. Later she graduated from Manhattan High School in 1964. She attended Syracuse University after high school, where she pursued literature. She later grew dissatisfied with the African-American population there. She enrolled at Manhattan Community College with the intention of relocating closer to home, but she discovered that her decision has not satisfied her. The child de Passe developed a passion for ballet and theatre as she grew older, going there frequently in the summer.

Suzanne started going to the neighbourhood New York dance bar “Cheetah Disco” as her disinterest in college grew. She became a critic of the club’s live music. The proprietors found this so amusing that they recruited her as the venue’s talent supervisor. She started off as a booking agent for Howard Stein after leaving her position as a talent coordinator. She became friends with Cindy Birdsong through her expanding network. She was later introduced to Berry Gordy as a result.
Gordy was at the time the famed Motown Records’ creative assistant. She started working with him eventually. The Jackson Five was one of De Passe’s most important discoveries. She not only found the Jackson Five, but also other musical artists like Lionel Richie, The Commodores and The Four Seasons to mention a few. She also co-wrote the screenplay for the Diana Ross-starring movie Lady Sings the Blues in 1972. De Passe finally founded her own business, de Passe Entertainment in 1992, thanks to her job experience and expertise in Motown Industries.
