Teddy Riley is also known by his stage names including ‘Lil Man’ and ‘The Finisher’. He is known for his production where he works on fusion of hip hop and R&B. He has worked as a producer with many artists including Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Samantha Mumba, the Boyz, Hi-Five, and Blackstreet, to name a few. Riley had a large impact on R&B genre. The genre started including rapping and more singing because of his influence. The genre is now more open to including raps and sound effects while recording the songs. Riley and Marvin Gaye who is a neo soul style singer, had a huge impact on gospel and R&B music.

Growing up, Riley showed a great talent as instrument player in his local church and as a result he started spending more and more time at a studio in the Harlem Club. When he was 14, various rappers started using his tracks for making music. Riley produced a single titled ‘Go see the Doctor’ for ‘Kool Moe Dee’s 12’ when he was 18 years old. In 1985, Riley also worked on the production of ‘The Show’. In 1986, he released his independent label which was a hit.

After he started his collaboration with Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling, the trio started the R&B group called ‘Guy’ and as a group they paved the way for the ‘new jack swing’ style in R&B genre. Guy was managed by Gene Griffin. He then worked as a producer for Big Daggy Kane’s single ‘I Get the Job Done’. He was also a producer for The Jacksons and James Ingram. Riley is also responsible for creating the pop hit remix of Jane Child’s ‘Don’t Wanna Fall in Love’. After the band ‘Guy’ disbanded in 1992, Riley went on work as a producer and performer for Wreckx-N-Effect.

He formed a second group in 1991 called ‘Blackstreet’ and the group released several hits. He has performed on various reunion tours and shows with both his bands (Guy and Blackstreet). Riley also finished and released Michael Jackson’s last album posthumously. The album was titled ‘Michael’ and it was released in 2010. He is also working as a producer for Korean music and has produced a mini album with Korean girl group ‘Rania’. In addition to this, he is also a part of the production team QDT which includes Snoop Dogg and DJ Quik.
