Tim Theodor Duncan was born on April 25, 1976, on Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and he was brought up in Saint Croix as well. Duncan originally wanted to be an Olympic-level swimmer because of his sisters. He was training to earn a spot in the 1992 Olympics as a teenager when Hurricane Hugo obliterated the island’s only Olympic-sized pool in 1989. Duncan lost some of his enthusiasm for swimming since his fear of sharks stopped him from swimming in the open ocean. One day before his 14th birthday, his mother passed away from breast cancer, dealing him a second blow. Instead, his brother-in-law persuaded him to try up basketball, and he eventually rose to the level of star player for the team at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School.

From the start, Duncan gained a reputation as a top-tier athlete. He and David Robinson were known as the “Twin Towers,” a defensive pairing. Duncan struggled in his third and fourth seasons with the Spurs due to a meniscus injury, but he rebounded and had a breakout season in 2001-2002, earning him the league’s Most Valuable Player award. Along with John Salley, he is one of the chosen few players who have won a Championship in each of the last three decades.
