Timothy Theodore Duncan known as Tim Duncan is an American former professional basketball player and Coach. He is referred to as “the Big Fundamental” and is recognized as one of the greatest players in NBA history and the greatest power forward of all time. Tim entirely played for the franchise San Antonio Spurs for his 19-year long playing career. In 2021, Tim was selected for the prestigious NBA 75th Anniversary Team after being inducted into the NMB Hall of Fame.

Tim Duncan Early Life

Tim Theodor Duncan was born on April 25, 1976, on Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and he was brought up in Saint Croix as well. Duncan originally wanted to be an Olympic-level swimmer because of his sisters. He was training to earn a spot in the 1992 Olympics as a teenager when Hurricane Hugo obliterated the island’s only Olympic-sized pool in 1989. Duncan lost some of his enthusiasm for swimming since his fear of sharks stopped him from swimming in the open ocean. One day before his 14th birthday, his mother passed away from breast cancer, dealing him a second blow. Instead, his brother-in-law persuaded him to try up basketball, and he eventually rose to the level of star player for the team at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School.

Dave Odom, the basketball coach of Wake Forest University, pursued Duncan, and he declined scholarship offers from the Universities of Hartford, Delaware, and Providence College to play for the Demon Deacons. Following his collegiate graduation, Duncan registered for the 1997 NBA draft and he was selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs. From the start, Duncan gained a reputation as a top-tier athlete. He and David Robinson were known as the “Twin Towers,” a defensive pairing. Duncan struggled in his third and fourth seasons with the Spurs due to a meniscus injury, but he rebounded and had a breakout season in 2001-2002, earning him the league’s Most Valuable Player award. Along with John Salley, he is one of the chosen few players who have won a Championship in each of the last three decades. On July 11, 2016, Tim Duncan announced his retirement from the NBA after 19 seasons with the Spurs.
