Al Davis Early Life
In Brockton, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1929, Allen Davis aka Al Davis was born to Louis Davis and Rose, and he also had a younger brother named Jerry. In 1934, the family relocated to a better house in Brooklyn, while attending Erasmus Hall High School, he learned coaching methods from Coach Al Badain. After completing his high school education, Davis attended Wittenberg College in Ohio before transferring to Syracuse University. After failing in his attempts to make the men’s basketball team, Davis developed an interest in football tactic.

He joined the Army in 1952 after receiving his master’s degree. In 1953, Davis was hired by General Stanley Scott of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, to coach the football team on his station. Right up until his 1954 Army discharge, he stayed at Fort Belvoir. He spent a year working as a freelance scout for the NFL’s Baltimore Colts, giving them advice on which athletes to draft or offer contracts to once they were back in the real world. Following the 1962 campaign, Davis was recruited as head coach and general manager by Raiders general partner F. Wayne Valley. Davis held the position for the shortest period of time in professional football history at 33.
He was appointed commissioner of the American Football League in April 1966 and quickly signed a number of the NFL’s finest players to AFL contracts. As one of three partners with a 10% ownership in the Oakland Raiders and the position of head of football operations, he established a holding company called A.D. Football, Inc. and later joined the team again. He developed a new partnership agreement in 1972, designating himself as the managing general partner with nearly total authority over team operations. Additionally, up until his passing, he acted as his own general manager.
