On September 1960, Andre Harrell was born in Harlem, New York. Together with his high school buddy Quadie Campbell, Harrell founded the hip-hop group, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In 1978, Harrell earned his high school diploma from Charles Evans Hughes. He attended Baruch College, switched to Lehman College, and declared communications and business management as his majors to pursue a career as a newscaster. He dropped out in his third year and began working at a nearby radio station.

Andre met Russell Simmons, who had recently started Def Jam Records, in 1983, and was given a job opportunity. He ultimately chose to divide Lyor Cohen’s $200 weekly starting wage with him to entice him to join the team. Andre worked his way up the ranks of Simmons’ Rush Communications, finally rising to the position of vice president and general manager. Harrell quit Def Jam after a few years of employment there and started his own record company, Uptown Records.
