Career

After graduating from Benedictine High School in Ohio, Paul started selling vintage jerseys under the mentorship of Andy Hyman. While selling jerseys he met LeBron James who is an American professional basketball player and the two exchanged numbers. In 2003, Paul was invited to join James and his inner circle including Maverick Carter and Randy Mims. After the NBA draft, Paul started working for Lean Rose who was James’s sports agent at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA). After working there for some time, Rich Paul and LeBron James both left CAA and Rose.

After his exit from the agency in 2012, Paul started his own agency by the name of ‘Klutch Sports Group’. A year later, he hired Mark Termini who is a long-time sports agent and attorney to work on NBA contract negotiations on the behalf of Klutch. With Klutch, Termini negotiated almost 1.4 billion dollars in NBA contracts for his clients in the years 2014 to 2019. In 2019, statistics show that Klutch had a total of 25 clients and brokered almost 1 billion dollars in contracts. In that same year, United Talent Agency (UTA) made an investment in Klutch Sports Group. After the investment, Paul was asked to run the sports division and after taking over he increased their client number from 4 to 23. He was offered a position on the UTA’s board of directors, which he accepted in 2020.

In 2019, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ruled it necessary for every sports agent to have a bachelor’s degree. Which many believed was in response to Rich Paul’s success as a sports agent, as he only graduated high school. After releasing an op-ed in The Athletic, Paul argued how such a decision was unfair to people of less prestigious backgrounds. As a result, NCAA backed down and didn’t go through with the decision.

Paul also launched ‘Klutch Conversations’ during NBA All-Star Weekend in 2020. The project was launched in association with SocialWorks and General Mills. The aim of Klutch Conversations was to encourage financial literacy among the young generation.

Paul was named as ‘World’s Most Powerful Sports Agent’ by Forbes in 2020. He was also included in the ‘Ebony Power 100 List 2020.
