Bernt Bodal was born on 14 June 1953 in Norway. He was raised in a small town outside of Oslo, Norway. His father worked as a tram conductor. Although his family was not poor, they were not wealthy either. Bodal’s family didn’t have a car until he was 10 years old and for a period they were unable to purchase a television. His true parents got divorced and his mother and stepfather came to the US before him. The Scandinavian kid soon followed.  He initially concentrated on a musical career and recorded three albums with his band, “Host”. Along with many other well-known musicians, he has shared the stage with Sammy Hagar and Roger Daltrey. Later, he made the decision to follow in his parent’s footsteps and started working as a fisherman. His parents had contacts in the fishing industry. He was able to obtain American citizenship by taking a job as a deckhand on a fishing boat in Massachusetts.

Bodal started by cleaning fish guts off equipment at a processing company in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Bodal also loaded fish onto a catcher processor in the Bering Sea. He asserts that he learned all of his skills while working. Bodal was promoted to captain after a year. Bodal spent 13 years fishing in Alaska and owned a part of a trawler. Prior to being chosen president in 1994, Bernt started working with American Seafoods in 1990 as a minority partner. Then, in 1999, he and his group were granted the sole right to acquire the business from the proprietors for about $475 million. They had assistance from the New York equity group. In June 2012, Bodal owned 67 percent of the company. Later, he was chosen to serve on the board of directors at Assurance Foreningen Skuld. The previously small-town lad was made the company’s CEO in January 2000. The son of a tram conductor retired from the American Seafoods Company in May 2018 after more than 25 years of employment.
