Bobby Charlton Career

In 1956, Charlton made his first appearance for Manchester United when he was only 18 years old. He became a regular for the team and was the survivor of the Munich air disaster in 1958. He was rescued by teammate Harry Gregg and was the last survivor of the crash from Manchester United Club. Charlton helped Manchester United win the FA cup in 1963, and the Football League in 1965 and 1967. He was captain of the team in 1968, and helped them win European Cup by scoring two goals in the final and Manchester United became the first English club to win the competition.

FIFA World Cup

On international level, Charlton played for England national team and he was part of the 1966 England team when they won the FIFA World Cup. In the same year he won Ballon d’Or. He was also a member of England team when they made it to top three in UEFA European Championship in 1968. Apart for 1966 World cup, Charlton also played for England in 1962 and 1970 World cup and he retired in 1970 as England’s most capped player of the time.

Charlton played most of his club career at Manchester United. After he left the club, he became a manager of Preston North End and later changed to player-manager. He was a director with Wigan Athletic and in 1984 he became a member of Manchester United’s board of directors.

Charlton was a record goal-scorer for both Manchester United and England for a long time, both his records were broken by Wayne Rooney. Now he is the second highest goal scorer for both Manchester united with 249 goals and England national team with 49 goals. He also had the record of most appearances by a player for Manchester United, with 758 games but the record was broken in 2008.

In 1994, Charlton received a Knighthood and was inducted in England’s Football Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2008, he was presented with BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. He was given a standing ovation while he received the award. In 2009, he was honored with the freedom of the city of Manchester. Charlton was voted the 4th best Manchester United player by the readers of Inside United in 2011. In 2016, Manchester United renamed the South Stand of Old Trafford in honor of Sir Bobby Charlton. A pitch was also named after him at the St George’s Park National Football Centre in 2017.

Charlton was diagnosed with dementia in 2020.
