Gullit was signed by HFC Haarlem in 1978, he made 91 appearances for the club and scored 32 goals. He was moved to Feyenoord in 1982 and made 85 appearances for them and scored 31 goals. PSV bought Gullit in for 1.2 million Dutch guilders in 1985. He scored 46 goals for the club in 68 matches. Nicknamed ‘The black Tulip’, Gullit was transferred from PSV to AC Milan for a world record transfer fee in 1987. At Milan, he made a notable trio with Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard. As a part of Milan team, Gullit won three Serie A title and two European Cups. he was signed by Chelsea in 1995 and became the club’s player-manager a year later. During his first season for Chelsea, he helped them win FA cup. It was Chelsea’s first major title in 26 years. With his career on a rise, Gullit won a Ballon d’Or award in 1987 and dedicated it to Nelson Mandela.

Gullit helped his national team win the Euro cup in 1988.

Gullit made his international debut by playing as a substitute for the Netherlands national team against Switzerland in the year 1981. He helped his national team win Euro cup in 1988. He continued to play strongly for his country’s team but in 1993 he had some differences with Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat and shortly before the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Gullit stopped playing for the Netherlands national team.

After serving as a player-manager for Chelsea, he was named as Newcastle’s manager in 1998 and helped the team reach 1999 FA Cup final in his first season with the team. After Newcastle, he managed Feyenoord. In 2007, Gullit joined LA Galaxy as a head coach. However, due to team’s poor performance in the season and Gullit’s own issue with the team he resigned in 2008. On January 2011, he became the head coach of Terek Grozny a club on Russian Premier League side but he was let go by the club that same year.

Gullit also spent several years as football commentator and in 2006 he had his own talk show on Dutch TV, he interviewed Nelson Mandela on the show. He also worked as sports analyst for Sky Sports and Al Jazeera Sports. Gullit was also a part of Heineken Champions League Trophy Tour in 2016.

He won Dutch Golden Shoe in 1986 and was Dutch Sportsman of the Year in 1987. Gullit was Chelsea’s Player of the Year in 1996 and was named by Pele in FIFA 100. He won Golden Foot in 2011 as a football legend. Gullit was inducted in AC Milan Hall of Fame and in Italian Football Hall of Fame.
