The Houston Rockets selected Armstrong as the 23rd overall choice in the 2001 NBA Draft. In return for the selection rights to Eddie Griffin of New Jersey, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets alongside other Rockets draft picks Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins.
Armstrong scored 2.2 points per game on average over his three seasons with the Nets. In 2002–03, he only participated in 17 games as a result of ongoing back pain. As a result, he was left off the 2003 postseason roster. Armstrong signed with the Golden State Warriors as a free agent in 2004 but was released before the start of the NBA season in 2004–05.
