In 1958, Brian Cornell was born in Queens, New York. Since he was six years old, his family had no father, and his mother’s heart condition caused her to be on assistance. As a result, Cornell’s maternal grandparents raised him most of the time. Cornell received his degree in 1981 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1991, Cornell enrolled in the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Between 2008 and 2009, Cornell served on the boards of directors for The Home Depot and OfficeMax, respectively. Cornell has been on the boards of both Polaris Industries and Centerplate. Since September 2015, Cornell has been a member of Yum! Brands’ board of directors. He has been on the board since 2015 and is the chairman of the Retail Industry Leaders Association.
