John Rodney Mullen is an American professional skateboarder. He does freestyle skateboarding and street skateboarding. Rodney is said to be the best skateboarder in the history of skateboarders. He does numerous tricks such as flat ground ollie, kickflip, heelflip, impossible, and 360-flip. At the age of 14, he won his first world freestyle skateboard championship, and he has won 34 contests out of 35. He went from freestyle skateboarding to street skateboarding, and he adapted many other tricks such as primo slides, dark slides, and Casper slides.

Rodney Mullen Early Life
Mullen was born in Gainesville; Florida and he had a pigeon-toe condition. When he turned 10, he started skateboarding and he got badly injured. His father was against skateboarding because he thought his son would get injured. Mullen used to practice in the garage and spent most of his time with his sister’s surfer friends. He loved skateboarding and practiced for hours.
Rodney Mullen Professional career
In 1978, after practicing for a year he entered US Open Championships in Jacksonville; he was fifth in the championship. Bruce Walker saw his performance and sponsored him in Walker skateboards from 1978-1980. His ideal was Jim McCall who was a professional skateboarder. His coach was Barry Zaritsky who was the owner of SiO Safety Shorts. When his family moved to a farm, he started training in the garage which led him to freestyle training. Mullen won 30 amateur competitions in the 1970s. He entered the Oasis Pro competition in 1980 and defeated the world champion, Steve Rocco. Mullen and Tony Hawk became good friends.
Bones Bridge
Mullen joined Bones Bridge because he was recommended by Powell Peralta and Tim Scroggs. He joined the chemical engineering program at the University of Florida.
The invention of Ollie
Mullen made many contributions to modern skateboarding. He started practicing ollie. Rodney popped the board off the ground and dragged it upwards and this opened the door to more complex flip tricks. He invented this trick and many others; therefore, he is rated the most important skateboarder. In the 1980s he invented many flip tricks, and they are considered essential.
World Industries
In 1989 Mullen left Bones Bridge to join World Industries.
Transition to street and Plan B
As the freestyle skateboarding was ending Mullen made his way to street-style skateboarding. In 1991 he joined Plan B skateboards. Mullen started a company in 1997 named A-team as he wanted to make a super skateboarding team. In March 2014 he attended the 10th anniversary of Almost company.
Mullen has appeared in many films, video games, and public speaking events and wrote a book.
