She got her bachelor’s degree from Browne University in 1998. She obtained her masters degree in English literature from Columbia University. She got inspired to write stories after reading plays by William Shakespeare. She has always been voracious reader in her youth with an interest in politics. She was married to Paramount Pictures business executive Brian Agboh till 2016. Their daughter’s name is Charlie.

Kemp wanted to be an English Literature professor but was not satisfied by the plan. She instead applied for an assistant job in Vogue but got rejected. She worked at women’s magazine Mademoiselle and men’s magazine GQ for three years. She left GQ and started writing for J. Crew catalogue. While working at GQ, she got offers from producers to convert her writing piece on interracial dating into tv show. This made her interested in producing for small screen. She moved from Westport to Los Angeles in order to pursue her dream as a television writer. She got her big break as a staff writer for the then-Fox hit series The Bernie Mac Show. Eventually, she began writing for television shows such as Eli Stones, Justice, and Beauty & the Beast. This led her to writing CBS political drama series The Good Wife. Courtney co-produced the TV series My Own Worst Enemy in 2008 and Happy Town in 2010. Her career really took off in 2014 whenshe wrote and executive producedAmerican crime drama series Power. The first pilot episode of Power was dedicated to her late father’s memory and the character was inspired by him.
