David E. Kelly was born on 4 April 1956 to Jack Kelly- who is part of United States Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. He studied at Belmont High School. He graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, where he turned the famous Bill of Rights into a play. Then, received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Boston University School of Law where he created sketch comedy for Legal Follies- university group. He is a Catholic Christian. He married actress Michelle Pfeiffer in 1993. They have two children named John Henry and Claudia Rose-who is adopted.

Kelly lived the American dream of 1990s; wrote a screenplay, moved to Hollywood, made multimillions & married a movie star. His first screenplay was turned into 1987 film From the Hip starring Judd Nelson. He officially started by writing L.A. Law (1986–1994) for Steve Bochco. Then executive produced and wrote some other hits: Picket Fences (1992–1996), Chicago Hope (1994–2000), The Practice (1997–2004), Ally McBeal (1997–2002), Boston Public (2000–2004), Boston Legal (2004–2008) and The Wedding Bells (2007). He is among few of the writers whose work is aired on all four famous American channels: ABC, Fox, NBC and CBS. His other popular creations for tv are Big Little Lies, The Lincoln Lawyer, Goliath, Doogie Howser, M.D. and Big Sky. During his career, he wrote 4 films and produced three of them namely From the Hip, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, Mystery, Alaska and Lake Placid. Steve Bochco and Kelly co-created David E. Kelley Productions. First series under this production banner was Picket Fences, which won 14 Emmy awards. In 1995, he left CBS and signed a deal with 20th Century Fox. Series produced under this collaboration are The Practice and Ally McBeal. In 2008 he signed a deal with Warner Bros. Television, ending the deal with Fox. He created Goliath series for Amazon Studios in 2015 and Big Little Lies for HBO in 2017.
