Craig Newmark Early Life
On December 6, 1952, Craig Alexander Newmark was born in Morristown, New Jersey. Craig was brought up in a Jewish home. He read science fiction and comic books as a young lad. When Newmark was 13 years old, his father passed away from cancer, bringing tragedy to the family. Then, he and his younger brother moved with his mother to Jacob Ford Village. Craig, who called himself a nerd, was a physics whiz in high school. He also sang in the chorus, co-captained the debate team, and was a member of the honor society. Following his high school graduation, Newmark enrolled at Case Western Reserve University. After completing his computer science coursework, he received a Bachelor of Science in computing and information sciences. Following two more years of study, Craig graduated from the university in 1977 with a Master of Science in computing and information sciences.

Following his graduation from Case Western Reserve University, Craig obtained employment at IBM as a systems engineer and programmer. He continued working with IBM for the following 17 years. As a computer programmer, Newmark later found work at organizations including Bank of America and Sun Microsystems. He moved to San Francisco in 1993 to work with Charles Schwab. Following Schwab’s introduction of Craigslist to the internet, Newmark began experimenting with various techniques to build one of the first online communities. Craigslist originally existed as an email list. Newmark used it to alert his friends about upcoming events in San Francisco. Craig soon discovered that he was including far more information in his emails as the email list grew. In the end, Craig chose to use a web-based directory rather than an email list. In 1996, craigslist.org was first made available.
In the beginning, Craigslist was largely a pastime for Newmark, who also kept his day job as a software developer. Finally quitting his job in 1999, Craig started giving his website his full attention. Despite acting as CEO at first, Newmark held this post for only a year before leaving. Jim Buckmaster took over as CEO. Since then, Craig has stepped back from running the business directly. He chooses instead to react to customer support questions and take action against scammers who abuse his platform for unethical purposes.
