While being born in Seoul, South Korea. Daewon Song grew up in Gardena, California. Hence, Song is Korean American and he is a professional American skateboarder. While growing up, his parents had an unstable relationship and Song was basically raised by his older sister. At the age of 14, he started skateboarding and later he was sponsored by a skateboard shop in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, California. The shop was called ‘Sporting Ideas’. In addition to skateboarding, Song was also a good artist as a youngster and won many competitions growing up.

Song started skateboarding in 1989 and turned professional in the sport in the year 1991. Later, Song was spotted by Rodney Mullen who is also an American skateboarder.
