Don Abbey Early Life

Abbey graduated from South Hadley High School. As a junior running back in 1963, he helped lead the school to its first undefeated season. That team went 8-0 and outscored their opponents 238 to 12 points. He went on to play two more seasons as a fullback and middle linebacker at Deerfield Academy. He was chosen to the Boston Globe All-New England Prep Team as a senior.

Abbey got a football scholarship from Penn State University as one of head coach Rip Engle’s final recruits. He was designated the starting fullback in 1967. Under Joe Paterno, he contributed to an 8-2-1 record by accumulating 386 running yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 148 receiving yards, 4 receiving touchdowns, and kicking 23 out of 26 extra points. Leads the squad in scoring and is ranked sixth in the country. In the final practice before the 1967 Gator Bowl, he sustained a knee injury that would limit him for the next two seasons.

In the first game of the 1968 season, he re-injured his knee and damaged his ankle. Tom Cherry overtook him in the depth chart despite his 164 running yards and three touchdowns.

Franco Harris, a senior starter and his backup, amassed 228 running yards and 4 touchdowns. He was a member of the 11-0, unbeaten 1968 and 1969 Orange Bowl champion teams that went undefeated. He had 778 running yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, and 4 receiving touchdowns towards the end of his collegiate career.

The Dallas Cowboys picked Abbey in the seventh round of the 1970 NFL Draft with the goal of using him as a linebacker. Due to the three previous knee operations, he underwent while in college. He was unable to accept the Cowboys’ offer of a financial deal. He was acquired by the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes in 1971. On July 23, they released him. He joined the New York Stars of the World Football League on April 9, 1974. On June 26, he was freed.
